We hear this a lot and we understand! During lockdown our homes have become: our place of work, a home school, where we socialise with friends (via zoom) and possibly a gym?
It’s very difficult to differentiate and create the focus for exercise in your home.
We often feel guilty taking the time to exercise, as the home has so many more distractions; partners, children, housework, odd jobs, life admin… the list can go on.
Here are our tips to get motivated at home and to make sure your workout happens:
- Put on your workout gear!
Decide when you are going to fit in your workout and get in your gear to take away the first little excuse to put it off. Getting in to the right clothes also puts you in the right mind set for what you are planning to do.
- Think about those endorphins!
At the start of a workout we can often feel sluggish and lacking in energy, but you know at the end you feel completely refreshed and reenergised. Guaranteed! So focus on that thought at the start and remind yourself why you are doing this.
- Just commit to a manageable time limit!
If the thought of an hour long cardio session stops you in your tracks, then decide on a time limit you are more comfortable with. Maybe aim for twenty minutes HITT or 30 minutes yoga session. Then once you have completed that you are in a more positive mindset, try to push for that little bit longer.
- Pick your favourite tunes!
Music has a powerful way of evoking different emotions and reactions. Think about not only your favourite songs, but think about your favourite film and download the soundtrack, or an album you listened to on your last holiday. Use the music to fuel your workout.
- Make it social!
OK this isn’t as easy as it sounds during lockdown, but you can get your partner, family members or flat mate involved in the workout with you. Add in some healthy competition to keep each other striving to work harder. Alternatively, we are fortunate enough to have technology on our side – meet a friend on zoom to train together. And of course Thrive training session are currently on zoom, keeping our community connected and focussed.
After your workout promise yourself a treat and I don’t mean dig into the ice-cream and undo all your good work. Try arranging an online cuppa with your best mate, go for a long bath or snuggle up with a good book. Those jobs and housework can wait that little bit longer: it doesn’t matter if the house is a little untidy, no one is coming round to see it right now!
